Mission

outside2_edited.jpg

Our mission at Melina's is to create a place where dreams take center stage and inspiring self confidence, discipline and respect for self and others is the ultimate goal.

Melina's is a non-competitive dance studio but our dancers can be seen sharing their love of dance at festivals, parades, and community events throughout the Northern Virginia and DC communities.

From our youngest 2 year old dancers, all the way up through our oldest dancers, our students are taught carefully planned and time proven curriculum that is specifically designed to teach solid technique fundamentals in a fun, exciting environment.

We appreciate that the heart of a dancer is born into many different bodies and the love of dance can take on many different styles. We believe that dancers of all ages can benefit from formal dance training through improved muscle tone, flexibility, and coordination; and that their minds and hearts are greatly inspired by the magic that is Melina's.

We believe if you can dream it you can achieve it!

Krystal Klem

Owner/Artistic Director

Krystal Klem grew up in Northern Virginia and began her ballet training at Dance World Studio, Degrasse and Manassas School of Dance before making her home at Sudley Dance and Arts in Manassas where she completed the Royal Academy of Dance Graded Examination Syllabus. She also branched off into other areas of dance including Jazz, Lyrical, and Modern/Contemporary and developed a gift and passion for dance choreography. She began assisting her instructors at the age of thirteen and by age 17 she was teaching all levels of ballet.During high school Krystal became an accomplished competitive dancer, receiving multiple high score awards for both performance and student choreography including several titles and national awards.

Krystal was selected for the summer intensive program at the Washington School of Ballet and continued her RAD training, progressing to the Vocational Graded Syllabus. After an ankle injury took her out of her pointe shoes, she continued to train in other dance forms at Barton & Williams and competed as a Senior Company Member at Fairfax Dance Company. In her senior year, she was offered a position with the Young Americans but another serious injury intervened and she was sidelined from dance for 18 months. During that time she decided that she would prefer to focus on teaching and passing her passion and love for dance on to future generations of dancers.

An award winning, gifted teacher, Krystal served as as ballet mistress and then simultaneously as a competitive instructor and head of primary dance at Heartbeats Music and Dance for 6 years before coming onboard as Assistant Director with Melina's in 2016. She was promoted to Artistic Director in 2019, and is thrilled to continue the Melina's tradition as Owner.  Krystal is an active member of International Dance Entrepreneurs Association, has her Youth Protection Advocates in Dance certification, is an active member of National Dance Education Organization, and the current chapter sponsor for Melina's Secondary and Junior chapters of National Honor Society of Dance Arts.

Peggy Pottenger

Dance Instructor

Peggy Pottenger began dancing at the age of four and was in her first Nutcracker Ballet at the age of five. By age eight she was training 6 days a week in ballet, modern, and jazz. Under the teaching and direction of Rosemary and Alan McCarter in Southern California, Peggy performed in winter and spring performances and had her first ballet solo at the age of fifteen. Also at the age of fifteen Peggy traveled to Budapest, Hungary for three weeks where she took ballet intensives from several European dance instructors. Back in California she participated in several workshops with dancers from the Joffrey Ballet and was privileged to be in several pieces choreographed by Joffrey dancers. One of her summers was spent at the Westside Studio in Los Angles, CA where she took dance intensives from one of Balanchine’s famous dancers Maria Tallchief.

Continuing her studying of dance through high school she often danced with a local college in Santa Maria, CA and attended a summer acting camp at the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts. During this time Peggy began exploring tap and also began to dance with the Academy of Dance in San Luis Obispo and had a paid position with the Civic Ballet of San Luis Obispo. In 1995 Peggy moved to Los Angles and trained at several acclaimed studios while working at the famous Ed Debevic’s restaurant where she waited tables while singing, dancing, and acting. After enjoying a few small dance jobs while attending many auditions, Peggy was offered a six month dance contract with Princess Cruise Lines.

After dancing as an entertainer with Princess she turned down the opportunity to pursue TV work with Dick Clark Productions to return to college in San Luis Obispo. She worked in the public schools with a program called "Children's Creative Project,” that taught dance to children of all ages. It was here that she learned her love for children and teaching them. She graduated in 2000 from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with her B.A. in Liberal Studies and received her Multiple Subject Teaching Credential which remains active today. Before finishing her degree Peggy traveled to China in a cultural arts exchange and danced on stages in Beijing, Shanghai, and places in between. She also taught dance at the Academy of Dance in San Luis Obispo, Central Coast Gymnastics, at her church, and while on the mission field in Kenya, Africa. Since returning to the States she has enjoyed the blessing of teaching in this area and is so thrilled to be at Melina's and to have her two daughters dancing here as well.
